Janney Named Jockey Club Chairman

Stuart S. Janney, III has been named chairman of The Jockey Club, replacing outgoing chairman Ogden Mills Phipps. William M. Lear, Jr. was named vice chairman during voting by the organization’s board of stewards held Saturday.

A member of The Jockey Club since 1992, Janney has been vice chairman since 2010 and has served as chairman of The Jockey Club’s Thoroughbred Safety Committee since its inception in 2008. He also serves on the boards of the New York Racing Association, the Keeneland Association, and King Ranch Inc.

Janney, in partnership with Phipps Stables, campaigned 2013 GI Kentucky Derby winner Orb. Alone or in partnership, he also campaigned graded stakes winners Air Support, Carriage Trail, Coronado’s Quest, Data Link, Hymn Book and Criminologist.

A trustee of John Hopkins University and John Hopkins Medicine, Janney resides in the Baltimore area.

Lear is the managing director of Stoll Keenon Ogden, a law firm based in Lexington, Kentucky. He is also a trustee for Keeneland Association.

Also during voting Saturday, William S. Farish, Jr. was elected to the board of stewards, filling the expired position of Craig Fravel.

Phipps, who announced his resignation as chairman in June, will become chairman emeritus and will continue to serve on the board of stewards.
